Dermatopathology (skin pathology) is a subspecialty of medicine primarily dealing with the microscopic evaluation of skin biopsies. Board certified dermatopathologists are fellowship trained medical doctors with additional certification in either dermatology and/or pathology.
The expertise of a dermatopathologist is instrumental in completing a behind-thescenes evaluation of the patient’s skin problem. Using the microscope, the dermatopathologist analyzes the biopsy specimen received and correlates the findings with the clinical presentation to arrive at the diagnosis; the first step in the successful treatment of the patient.
At University Dermatologists, our board certified dermatopathologists offer a full array of services including:
- Analysis of skin biopsy specimens (H&E)
- Immunofluorescent studies for the diagnosis of certain inflammatory/immunobullous skin disorders
- Immunohistochemical differentiation of various skin tumors
- Consultation/Second opinion of slides/biopsies processed in outside laboratories.
